Detroit Lions: 5 Returning Players With Roster Spots in Doubt

5. Don Muhlbach

The longest-tenured player on the Lions roster, Don Muhlbach still has the snapping skillz to pay the billz but he is a prime target to get bit by Bob Quinn’s competition bug. That’s a departure from the previous regime, not that there was anything wrong with writing Muhlbach’s name in with a Sharpie marker for a roster spot as soon as training camp began.

Quinn commonly used the words “competition” and “compete” in his comments during and after the 2016 NFL Draft and that means Muhlbach will face a serious battle for the long snapper job for the first time in his Lions career.

In fact, it may not be an exactly fair fight after the Lions used a sixth-round pick to select long snapper Jimmy Landes last month. It would seem Muhlbach will have to out-perform the rookie to keep his roster spot, otherwise the Lions could turn to the younger, cheaper player who was hand-picked by Quinn.
