Goaltenders

Mike Vernon: He was the goalie who finally brought the Stanley Cup back to Detroit. Red Wing fans haven’t been kind to most goalies and weren’t very kind to Vernon until he beat up Patrick Roy in that famous March 26th game. That especially changed when Vernon won the Conn Smythe for the Red Wings in 1997, his last year in Detroit. He will always be remembered as the goalie who delivered the Cup to Hockeytown after a 42 year wait.

Chris Osgood: The guy who took over for Vernon in the 1997-98 season and led the Red Wings to a second-consecutive Stanley Cup. No team has done that since. Osgood struggled in his first years with the Red Wings including giving up the game winning goal against the eighth-seeded San Jose Sharks in the infamous 1994 playoff upset. He really grew up as his career went on and in 1998 he also beat up Patrick Roy and had the crowd chanting “Ozzie! Ozzie!”. He is a Hall of Famer in my book.
