Michigan State defense comes to play

The Scarlet Knights lost four yards and punted on their first drive of the game. The day would not get much better for them as they failed to score a single point, going three-and-out five times and ending nine drives with punts.

Rutgers possessed the ball in Michigan State territory two times and gained only 149 yards of offense and eight first downs. Starting quarterback Giovanni Rescigno was replaced after his second interception by Tylin Oden, who completed neither of his passing attempts but led the Scarlet Knights in rushing with 40 yards on seven carries. The shutout was the first for Michigan State team since a 14-0 win over Purdue in 2013.

Spartans dominate ground game, three quarterbacks play

Michigan State rushing attack looked like the one that had been advertised in preseason on Saturday, L.J. Scott reached 100 rushing yards by the end of the first quarter and ended up with 122 on 20 carries and a score. Madre London and Gerald Holmes split carries for most of the second half, each ending up with 52 yards on nine rushes, London scoring his first two touchdowns of the season. Nine different Spartans tallied at least one positive run in the game, combining for 277 yards on 50 rushes.

Under center Michigan State once again played three different quarterbacks, but this time it was because they wanted to. Tyler O’Connor was effective as a starter, completing ten of 15 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns before ceding his spot to Damion Terry late in the third quarter. Sophomore walk-on Colar Kuhns entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed his first career college pass, a five-yard completion to Darrell Stewart Jr.
