Michigan State Basketball vs. Mississippi Valley State: Game Time, TV, Live Stream
The #13 Michigan State Spartans seek their first win of the season on Friday as they host the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in their home opener.
The #13 Michigan State Spartans (0-2) started their season with two losses away from home to top-ten opponents, but come into Friday’s home opener against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (0-3) as heavy favorites, having never lost a home opener under head coach Tom Izzo.

The Delta Devils started their season 0-3 with losses to Northwestern, #19 West Virginia and Kent State, giving up an average of 98 points per game and losing each game by at least 30 points. This is not a surprising start for MVSU, which lost each of its 14 non-conference games a season ago before picking up their first win.
The Devils are experienced, as four of their five leaders in minutes are seniors. Their offense is dependent on success from beyond the arc, where they shot 43.6% in their first three games. However, they lack size in the paint and have been outrebounded 153-83 in those games.
Michigan State is also looking for its first win after losing their opener in the closing seconds to #10 Arizona in Honolulu on Friday and being outclassed by #2 Kentucky at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.
Freshman Miles Bridges has been the focus of the action for the Spartans, having played more minutes, taken more shots and grabbed more rebounds than anyone else on the roster through two games. His shot has been inconsistent—especially from beyond the arc, where he is 2/11 so far—and he has committed 13 turnovers, one-third of the team’s total.
Despite his struggles, Bridges has shown some impressive flashes in his first two games the Spartans understandably have high hopes for his development.
While the other freshmen on the roster have been gaining a lot of attention, sophomore forward Kenny Goins has quietly been one of the Spartans’ most efficient players, averaging 6.5 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes in Michigan State’s first two games, shooting 75% from the floor. As a team, however, Michigan State has not shot well, only converting 37.8% of their field goal attempts, 25.5% of their three-point attempts and an abysmal 44.4% of their free throws.
