Detroit Lions: Handing Out Awards for the 2016 Season
By Zac Snyder
Worst Moment: Week 17 Loss to Green Bay Packers
The road win over the Vikings was a high point because it signaled what could be, while the Lions’ week 17 home loss to the Packers was a low point because of what could have been. That loss earned the distinction from our voters as the Lions’ worst moment of the season, eclipsing even the playoff loss and the finger injury to Matthew Stafford.
Worst Moment | First | Second | Third | Points |
Can’t beat Packers at home | 3 | 1 | 11
Stafford injures hand vs Bears | 3 | 1 | 10
Blown out of playoffs | 3 | 1 | 7
Titans score on final drive | 2 | 2
Running back injuries | 1 | 2
Second half at Cowboys | 1 | 2
Loss at Bears | 1 | 1 | ||
First half at Packers | 1 | 1 |
Eight “moments’ got votes but this was really a three-way race between the week 17 loss, Stafford’s injury and the playoff loss.
The week 17 loss was painful in particular as it was a final failing to win the division, which would have set up a different scenario for the playoffs. Losing in the playoffs, especially in blowout fashion, hurt but it didn’t draw a single first place vote, suggesting voters may have been resigned to the Lions’ fate after witnessing disappointments in previous weeks.
With the way the season ended it is left to wondering just how much Stafford’s finger injury impacted his play and ultimately the result of games.
