The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox will try to wrap up the series on Thursday afternoon after dealing with rainouts on Monday and Wednesday.

The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox have not yet played a game on the day it was originally scheduled after suffering through weather postponements on Monday and Wednesday. They were able to get a makeup game in on Tuesday, but yesterday’s game will have to be made up as part of a doubleheader in May.

There were some concerns about the teams’ ability to get today’s game in as well, but the forecast appears clear, if still a bit chilly. The weather report calls for temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s with the chance of rain in the single digits for Chicago on Thursday.

Brad Ausmus made the decision to shuffle his pitching rotation in light of the altered schedule. Jordan Zimmermann and Daniel Norris have been pushed back to the weekend’s home series with Matthew Boyd being brought forward to pitch Thursday’s series finale.

Boyd was one of the Tigers’ surprise standouts in spring training. He was allowed to compete for a starting pitching position, but the thought was that he might start the season in the minor leagues. He put that talk to rest with 23 strikeouts and just one walk in 25 innings of work. He impressed the coaching staff enough that they were comfortable moving Anibal Sanchez to the bullpen to clear a spot in the rotation.

The White Sox will stick with scheduled starter James Shields. Shields turned in the worst season of his career in 2016 with an ERA that ballooned to 5.85. His strikeout rate dropped to 16% (versus a career average of 20%), and his walk rate jumped to 10% (from 6%). The White Sox need to hope for a different James Shields this season.
