Cornerback

The Ravens have Jimmy Smith, a very good corner when healthy. The problem is that he is not reliably available. Smith has missed four or more games in 2/3 of his seasons as a pro. They signed Brandon Carr from the Cowboys this offseason to shore up the terrible play they put on the field apart from Smith. They also drafted Alabama corner Marlon Humphrey in the second round of the 2017 draft. Their outside corner play should be markedly improved from previous years.

Maurice Canady will likely claim the slot corner role with Tavon Young out of the picture for the short term at least. Canady was a sixth round draft pick in 2016. Brandon Boykin looked like an ascending star three years ago, but he is likely the Ravens’ fifth option. His career is on life support at this point, but rookie corners seldom adapt quickly. If Smith misses time early Boykin could be in the starting line up for the Baltimore Ravens.

Safety

Eric Weddle is still one of the best safeties in football at 32 years of age. He gives the Ravens one of the best secondary generals available, and their secondary should be in the right place at all times. They added Tony Jefferson as their strong safety, which should free Weddle up to make plays. Jefferson is a huge hitter and comfortable close to the line. The Ravens do not have depth here. The possibility of an injury to Weddle likely moved Webb from slot corner to free safety. Sixth round pick Chuck Clark is a name to watch for the future, but his contributions will likely be on Special teams as a rookie.

Specialists

Sam Koch has been the Baltimore Ravens punter since 2006. They brought in a college free agent but it’s likely just to keep the 11-year veteran’s leg fresh for the season. Justin Tucker will likely be the NFL’s number one fantasy kicker again. The Ravens offense has some issues that are likely to prevent them from getting the job done.

Michael Campanaro Chris Moore and Chuck Clark will likely compete for the return jobs in training camp.

The Ravens looked like there was a possibility of salvaging a season a week ago. Now their quarterback has a back issue, one of their hopeful interior line starters retired, an important running back and their slot corner are also gone for the season. Of course, a lot can change between now and December 13.
