Michigan football team to wear all-maize uniforms versus Florida
By Matt Snyder
The Michigan football team will wear maize jerseys and maize pants in their season opener versus the Florida Gators at AT&T Stadium.
The Michigan football team will be eschewing their traditional uniforms when the take on the Florida Gators at AT&T Stadium this Saturday. They’ll instead go with a maize shirts and maize pants look as the two teams elect a color-on-color matchup. Florida will reportedly wear all blue.
The all-maize look was spotted on the practice field on Monday morning.
Aaron McMann of MLive has the details on Twitter, including official photos from Nike.
The all-blue approach isn’t unique for Florida, but the all-maize look will be a novel one for Michigan. The Wolverines have traditionally elected for a classic look, but they’ve experimented with alternate uniforms in previous seasons. This post at MVictors details the program’s history with one-off uniforms.
The official Michigan football Twitter account chimed in just after 2:00 p.m. to officially confirm the reports and offer another look at the combination.
I’m always willing to give alternate uniforms a try — I’m was a nominal fan of the block M uniform they wore against Notre Dame back in 2011 and I tend to enjoy Oregon’s myriad combinations — but the execution here is lacking. They appear to be bright for the sake of being bright which is a crime because there’s not enough whimsy present for them to be fun. It’s just maize. A lot (lot, lot) of maize.
Maybe they’ll look better on the field as a contrast to Florida’s blue, but my bet is that these will be something we all try to forget rather than something that is oft repeated.
