If you had your choice, would you rather the Detroit Lions build an immovable object on defense or an unstoppable force on offense?

Most successful teams in the NFL have an identity, some are known for the ground-and-pound defensive archetype, others are quick-striking, attacking offenses that put up tons of points. Since drafting Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions have been an offense-first franchise.

I played football for a long time, watched it for even longer. One thing remains the same throughout it all. Whether it is the head coach, the QB, the owner, or the fans; everybody always knows best. As fans, we all want our teams to win, but we all have ways in which we’d like to see them win. We all know the best way to put a team together, the best way to coach a team, and the best way to play.

Earlier, I posed this question on Twitter and I want to put a Lions spin on it.

If you could only have one…

Are you a fan that is hoping the advent of the Matt Patricia era will have the Lions in the conversation for Top 5 defense in the next 3-5 years, while the offense is mid-tier, good enough to get the job done à la the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers?

Or

Are you a fan of high-flying offenses hoping that Matt Patricia will institute whatever processes Bill Belichick has to create a consistently great offense and an opportunistic defense?

And

What do you think the Lions need to do to get there?

My take:

I prefer the latter. Give me offense over defense every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. I would rather watch a team built like the 2018 Patriots than one built like the 2018 Jaguars. As a former QB in my playing days, I am very biased, but like everybody else, I know best.

I can appreciate a defensive struggle every now and again, but a high-flying offense way more fun to watch. Also, the Lions are much closer to having the top offense in the league than they are to having the top-ranked defense.
