Matt Patricia met with the media before practice this morning. He talked about injuries, personnel groups, and why he loves training camp.

Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia addressed the media at the team’s Allen Park facility before the first day of training camp. He did not go into a great amount of detail because even he is not sure exactly what he’s got to work with.

The team is not in pads for a few more days, this is more like an OTA setting than an actual football practice. The team is just getting set, getting ready. Patricia is just hoping that the team can pick up where they left off, and eliminate mistakes that were made in the spring.

“We are excited to get back. we have 90 guys in the building ready to start working.” said the rookie head coach. “I’m excited to be out there with the guys.”

Patricia clearly loves training camp. He lit up as he described it to the gathered media. He beamed as he said, “There’s nothing to it besides just pure football, there’s no scheme, there’s no opponent, there’s no timeline.”

The lack of pressure to get ready for an impending game allows the coaches to look at the pieces they have. It is a period of assessment. They are looking for players “who can learn the fundamental techniques across the board.” Players are able to show the staff their raw football ability, as opposed to how well they fit into a box.

There will not be a lot of crazy bombshells coming out of the first day of training camp, but here are the nuggets of knowledge that Matt Patricia gave us in his press conference before the day started.
