Perry Fewell

Perry Fewell’s name is starting to resurface as NFL jobs continue to open.  Fewell most recently served as the Carolina Panthers interim head coach.  He’s filled the same role in the past with the Buffalo Bills.

More from Detroit Lions

Being an interim head coach multiple times certainly has it’s benefits.  It shows teams view him as a leader but perhaps not what it takes to be a full-time head coach.  Fewell has some history with Matt Patricia.  He was the New York Giants defensive coordinator that bested the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

Fewell’s defense wasn’t the reason New York won the Super Bowl; in fact, the defense was often criticized for struggling often. Three years after winning the title, he was let go as the defense slipped from 6th best to the 24th best.

Before being elevated to the teams interim head coach, Fewell worked as the Panthers secondary coach.  It was a secondary that allowed 231 passing yards/game, which ranked 13th in the league.  The total defense finished 31st as Carolina allowed a whopping 143 rushing yards/game.  They allowed 29.4 points per game, which also ranked 31st.

If I’m Perry Fewell, I remind everyone that I was the defensive backs coach, and that was the only bright spot on the Carolina defense last season.

He wouldn’t be my first choice, but he is someone that Detroit should consider.  The fact that he’s been an interim HC twice already, with Matt Patricia on the hot seat, the third time could be just around the corner, and you know what they say; the third times’ a charm.
