Detroit Lions hit a home run drafting Penei Sewell seventh overall
By Bob Heyrman
With the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select OT Penei Sewell out of Oregon.
What a beautiful sight, seeing a live event with real people in attendance. The NFL Draft is one of my favorite events of the year, and last year’s footage from Roger Goodell’s basement just didn’t cut it.
Tonight is a big night for the Detroit Lions and their new regime led by general manager Brad Holmes accompanied by John Dorsey, Ray Agnew, Chris Spielman, and company.
The Detroit Lions, once again picking in the top ten, had an opportunity to draft a building block, a piece that will be a plug-and-play player, someone that will be the centerpiece of changing the culture within this franchise.

The Detroit Lions hit a home run drafting Penei Sewell with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hoping Sewell had been atop the Detroit Lions draft board, understanding there was a good chance he wouldn’t be available when the organization was on the clock.
Tonight is a great night for Lions fans.
This new regime just proved it’s not the S.O.L. The past regimes would have selected a receiver like Smith, or the fourth-best quarterback, or Micah Parsons. All outstanding players, but it’s important to rebuild in the trenches when at ground zero.
Sewell was the best player available; he’s a difference-maker. The Detroit Lions had an above-average offensive line last season; the addition of Sewell makes this potentially a top-five NFL offensive line as quickly as 2021.
Aside from Trevor Lawrence, in my opinion, Sewell is the closest to a can’t miss prospect in the entire draft class. At just 20-years old, Sewell added to a group that features Frank Ragnow, Taylor Decker, and second-year guard Jonah Jackson makes for a bully of an offensive line.
Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, QB Jared Goff, and running backs D’Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, and Kerryon Johnson must be ecstatic.
