The Detroit Pistons are in the midst of a busy offseason. GM Trajan Langdon made an effort to revamp the roster after last year's playoff disappointment. While they are still not done as they await resolution on Jalen Duren talks, the Pistons' roster looks different from what it did when the season ended. Whether it's better, however, remains to be seen.
The peak of free agency is over. Teams are now trying to fill the final spots on their rosters or signing players to two-way contracts. The remaining free agents are desperately hoping to get one of these spots, but each passing day means dwindling chances. This list includes a few former Pistons who remain unsigned in free agency.
Killian Hayes
Hayes landed an opportunity with the Sacramento Kings towards the end of last season, but couldn't make the most of it. The issues that plagued him during his time in Detroit followed him to Sacramento, where he averaged 5.5 points and 3.5 assists per game on 30.4% shooting from the field. His 27% accuracy from downtown was a reminder of why he couldn't stick in the NBA after being the seventh-overall pick in 2020.
It's nearly impossible to imagine Hayes landing a standard NBA contract before the season. A two-way deal may be possible, or he could go back to the G League to prove himself. He has refused to try his luck overseas, but that is increasingly looking like the eventual path for the 24-year-old guard.
Isaiah Livers
Former Pistons second-round pick landed with the Phoenix Suns last summer after missing the entire 2024-25 campaign with a hip injury. He played 36 games with Phoenix on a two-way deal, but wasn't particularly effective, hitting 34.4% of his field goal attempts.
Earlier in his career, Livers showed intriguing flashes. He was on his way to becoming a decent three-and-D option, but injuries have been a major issue for the former Michigan standout. Thanks to his size and versatility, the 27-year-old could still land a two-way deal, but Livers' outlook is not as bright as it once was.
Mason Plumlee
Believe it or not, the 36-year-old Plumlee was on the NBA finalists, the San Antonio Spurs, last season and even appeared in six playoff games. Sure, they were all garbage time minutes, but he was very close to winning his first ring in his 13th NBA season.
Plumlee was among the questionable free agent signings of the Troy Weaver regime. In the 2020 offseason, Detroit gave Plumlee a three-year, $24.7 million contract for no discernible reason. This deal aged like a gallon of milk immediately, and he was salary-dumped to Charlotte the next offseason.
He has played for four different organizations since his Pistons stint, bringing the number of teams he has played for in his career to eight. We'll have to wait and see whether he can get that to nine this summer.
Kelly Olynyk
Another veteran journeyman center who was with San Antonio last season is Kelly Olynyk. The 35-year-old is also looking for his next opportunity, but one has to think that he has a better shot of landing a new deal than Plumlee.
The Canadian big man is obviously not the player he once was, but he still has an intriguing enough skill set to help a lower-end team. He can shoot, pass, and score, a skill set he was able to showcase during his time in Detroit in the 2021-22 season. A knee injury kept his Pistons season short, but his contract helped Detroit land Bojan Bogdanovic in the 2022 offseason.
