David Montgomery Calls Out Ben Johnson for Leaving Lions
The Detroit Lions suffered their first big personnel loss of the offseason on Monday, as news broke of now-former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson agreeing to become the next head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Given Johnson's incredible work in Detroit, many fans are gutted to see the mastermind go. His departure stings even more given the fact he's leaving for a divisional rival who's now primed to succeed with him calling the shots.
While this is an amazing opportunity for Johnson, who's now serving as an NFL head coach for the first time in his career, it appears not everyone within the Lions is happy with the decision.
Star Detroit running back David Montgomery made his first public comments on Johnson's exit Tuesday with a post on his Instagram Story. He didn't write a caption, but it features a meme of Montgomery looking puzzled to his left, where it says "Ben Johnson deciding to coach the Bears" and his staff photo.
Obviously, this is Montgomery expressing some unhappiness with the situation. While he could just be upset overall, this post including the Bears may be the most telling. It's possible the running back is questioning why Johnson would leave for the NFC North's last-place team this past season.
If that is the case, he has a point. Though Chicago boasts plenty of talent and cap space to work with, the Bears' hated ownership and very lackluster front office pose major obstacles in the way of success.
That being said, perhaps Johnson will be the one who can turn things around. He also likely wouldn't have left the Lions' well-run organization for a place he believes is a dumpster fire, so perhaps he's received some assurances on changes to ensure success.
Regardless, the pressure is now on Detroit's regime to find a worth successor to Johnson, who clearly left his mark on the players and team as a whole.
