One of the biggest games of the Detroit Lions' 2025 season will come against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football this weekend. Having said that, the looming SNF showdown is all fans have been thinking about throughout the last week, which is why some Lions supporters will check in on the franchise's former players to take a break from the current action.

Former Detroit running back Ameer Abdullah is one ex-Lion who's getting another shot at securing a job in Week 6. The Indianapolis Colts announced on Saturday morning that Abdullah has been promoted from the practice squad for the second straight week and will suit up against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Ex-Lion Ameer Abdullah Promoted to Colts Active Roster

With the Colts running back Tyler Goodson missing Sunday with a groin injury, Abdullah will likely handle the RB3 duties behind Jonathan Taylor and rookie DJ Giddens. The former Lions second-round pick held that some role in last week's 40-6 blowout over the Las Vegas Raiders, recording two rushes for six yards and a touchdown while also tallying a solo tackle on 10 special teams snaps.

Abdullah didn't make much noise outside of his TD last week, so it'll be interesting to see if he's capable of more this weekend. The ex-Nebraska Cornhusker amassed 572 total yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns in 16 games (3 starts) with the Raiders in 2024, which ended up being his highest totals since he posted a 190-714-5 stat line with the Lions in 2017.

Abdullah will only have one practice squad activation remaining after this weekend before the Colts have to make a decision, highlighting how important it is to have a strong showing. Much to his dismay, though, the Cardinals have played well on the ground this season, allowing only 92.4 rushing yards per game (T-8th) and 3.9 yards per carry (7th).

Playing in the NFL is all about capitalizing on opportunities, and that's what Abdullah must do on Sunday. Goodson hasn't done much as the Colts' RB3 (six yards on two carries in two games), leaving the door open for the ex-Lion to steal his job if he can make the most of his rushing and pass-catching experience.
