Former Lion Hints at Potential Reunion Following Detroit's Injuries
By Jovan Alford
The Detroit Lions’ secondary is in serious trouble after seeing cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Khalil Dorsey go down with season-ending injuries. Davis suffered a jaw injury, while Dorsey was carted off the field in Sunday’s loss against the Buffalo Bills.
The Lions’ secondary was already banged up with rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. being placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.
With Detroit pushing for the NFC North crown and the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the Lions need to find a couple of adequate replacements as soon as possible. At this point of the regular season, there aren’t many options available in free agency.
However, the Lions could reunite with one of their former players, who appeared in 29 games over the last three seasons.
Former Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs posted an interesting message on Twitter, hinting towards a possible reunion in the Motor City.
“The secret of success is to be ready when your opportunity comes.” He also had three 100 emojis.
Lions fans saw this tweet from Jacobs and got excited about him potentially coming back to make another playoff run.
Detroit did not re-sign the veteran defensive back after he spent the last three years with the organization. The 27-year-old Jacobs was signed this summer by the Los Angeles Rams but was waived a month later due to injury.
After getting cut by the Rams in August, the former Lions defender has worked out for multiple teams recently, including the Washington Commanders, New York Jets, and Denver Broncos.
Last season with the Lions, the 5-foot-11 defensive back recorded 55 total tackles, eight pass deflections, three interceptions, and two tackles for loss in 15 games. Jacobs gave up his fair share of receiving TDs (6) but still produced a 63.4 completion percentage allowed on targets and a 96.5 pass rating allowed when targeted (both career highs).
If the Lions bring back Jacobs, they shouldn't expect him to fix the secondary overnight after giving up 48 points. However, he gives them a player familiar with Aaron Glenn's system and can play immediately.
