As we inch closer to the MLB trade deadline next month, teams across the majors will be trying to figure out if they will be buyers or sellers. At the same time, teams are making subtle changes to their active and 40-man rosters till then to fill any voids that they may have.
The Detroit Tigers have been quite active over the last day or so, designating struggling veteran relief pitcher John Brebbia for assignment. The Tigers replaced Brebbia’s spot on the roster by claiming veteran Carlos Hernández off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
While the Tigers are making small roster moves, a couple of their former players have changed teams.
Former Tigers IF Keston Jiura DFA'd by Rockies
On Monday, veteran infielder Keston Hiura, who spent part of the 2024 season within Detroit’s farm system, was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies after Sunday’s game.

Keston Hiura designated for assignment.
Hiura spent eight games with the Rockies, where he hit .222 with a double and an RBI. Before getting called up, the former Detroit minor leaguer was playing at Triple-A Albuquerque. He was slashing .243/.360/.467 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 43 games.
Tigers fans may not remember Hiura’s brief time with the club. He signed with Detroit as a free agent in February 2024, but never made it to the big leagues.
Hiura spent part of the 2024 season at Triple-A Toledo, where he slugged a pedestrian .232 at the plate with six home runs and 24 RBI across 49 games. Despite his production at Triple-A, the Tigers moved on from the veteran infielder on July 3, 2024.
The veteran right-handed hitter was signed eight days later by the Los Angeles Angels. Hiura played 10 games in the majors with the Angels, but saw most of his at-bats in the minors at Triple-A Salt Lake (37 games).
Since he was DFA’d, we will see if Hiura will go back to Triple-A Albuquerque, or if another team claims him off waivers in the coming days. Either way, his outlook isn't all that promising at the moment.
