Now in the thick of an important offseason, the Detroit Lions have been surprisingly quiet after the first week of free agency. They struck big with the signing of center Cade Mays, but the rest of their early haul has been filled with under-the-radar free agents, including safety Christian Izien, running back Isiah Pacheco, and offensive tackle Larry Borom.
While the Lions may feel their championship window is getting smaller, the free agent approach has made it clear they aren’t straying away from their core that helped them rise to become an NFC powerhouse over the 2023 and 2024 seasons. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Lions went back to some old friends as the second week of free agency begins, and a perfect candidate may be safety Ifeatu Melifonwu.
A former member of the Lions secondary from 2021-24, Melifonwu was considered a steal when he was drafted before injuries got in the way. But given Detroit’s needs, a reunion makes sense, and it could have the soon-to-be 27-year-old back in Honolulu Blue as he analyzes his market.
Lions Could Seek Ifeatu Melifonwu Reunion Amid Concerns at Safety
Melifonwu wasn’t a bad player during his time in Detroit, but he spent more time off the field than he did on it. Out of a potential 68 games, the Syracuse product only played in 37 of them and battled through quad, ankle, hamstring, finger, and Achilles injuries. Even in the year he played all 17 games in 2023, he worked through a broken hand, limiting his ineffectiveness in a late-season push.
With that in mind, the Lions moved forward with Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch as their top safeties, but things have changed drastically since Melifonwu left town.
Joseph is dealing with a degenerative knee condition that head coach Dan Campbell said isn’t “going away” and is more about managing “wear and tear” moving forward.
Branch is also in an uncertain spot after tearing his Achilles tendon last November. With his recovery set to bleed into next season and possibly keep him sidelined for most of the 2026 campaign, depth at safety has been an important objective for the Lions.
Detroit has already responded to this with the signing of Izien, who sounds ready to seize a starting role after signing a one-year deal in the opening week of free agency. The Lions also have Thomas Harper, who filled in when Joseph missed the final 11 games of last season due to his knee injury. But having another option that’s familiar with the defense would be huge and could be Melifonwu’s best option moving forward.
While Melifonwu would like to be a starter, the options are already dwindling. The Chicago Bears lost both starting safeties, Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard, in free agency and have an open spot next to free agent addition Coby Bryant. But while Ben Johnson could poach another former Lion, the Bears have already been rumored to have their eyes on a long-term replacement in April’s draft.
The Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, and Philadelphia Eagles are also interested in a safety entering the second week of free agency. But with Melifonwu’s injury history, it may be enough to scare them off.
By coming to Detroit, Melifonwu has a few options. In the short-term, he can compete with Izien and could be the starting strong safety come Week 1. Even if he’s beat out by Izien, he could be one injury away from seeing the field and could rehab his value to hit the market again next offseason.
It could take a starting offer from another team to send this idea up in smoke. But the reunion makes sense, and it could lead Melifonwu back to Detroit as free agency continues.
