Lions need to save overlooked CB with trade before training camp

He can be a solid pickup.

The Detroit Lions already had some questions about their cornerback situation. Now, with Terrion Arnold no longer with the team, what was a concern turned into a catastrophe. They're extremely thin and vulnerable at one of the most important positions.

The clock is ticking, and with Rasul Douglas joining the Washington Commanders, the Lions have even fewer options to consider in free agency. That means they'll have to get creative to find some trade partners.

Considering that, they should keep an eye out in the AFC South. The Jacksonville Jaguars might be willing to part ways with Christian Braswell at the right price, and he'd be an underrated but solid pickup for Dan Campbell's team.

The Lions should inquire about Christian Braswell's availability

The Jaguars have a bit of a logjam in the secondary. Montaric Brown is locked in as one of the starting cornerbacks, and Travis Hunter will reportedly play heavy snaps on both sides of the field, now that he's back to full strength.

Inevitably, that will make Braswell the odd man out. He's played good-enough ball since entering the league in 2023, so it's not a matter of talent but pecking order. With Jarrian Jones and Jourdan Lewis also in the picture, there are just too many mouths to feed on Liam Coen's team.

Of course, young players with little experience may not offer the type of upside this team needs at the moment. That said, the Lions are, unfortunately, unlikely to make a big splash and go after the Denzel Wards of the world. Instead, they're more likely to roll the dice on cheap pickups with a high upside.

The Jaguars struggled with cornerback play for a while, so they're overcompensating with as many players as they can. That will inevitably force their hand to make a decision, either by trading one of them or by cutting him ahead of the final 53-man roster deadline.

Whatever the case may be, the fact of the matter is that the Lions need to do something. They can't bank all their hopes on an undersized day-3 pick like Keith Abney II, as talented as he may be. This team should be looking to make a splash after missing the playoffs last season, and Arnold's situation has raised the bar even further.

General manager Brad Holmes should be working overtime to solve this puzzle. And even if Braswell might not be the biggest fish up for grabs, he's certainly one that will most likely fit the Lions' potential trade offer.
