The Detroit Lions made the painful but necessary decision to cut ties with Terrion Arnold. The former first-round pick is facing some serious legal trouble after making questionable decisions, and he may never set foot on an NFL gridiron.

Arnold's role with the team was already in jeopardy. He played poorly as a rookie and was hurt in his second year. So, legal issues aside, the Lions were already probably considering potential exit strategies and alternatives.

The Lions won't have many free agent options to replace him at this point in the offseason. As such, they may have to break the bank to find someone in the trade market. If that's the case, then Denzel Ward should be their guy.

Lions must make a run at Denzel Ward

Denzel Ward might be the most underrated cornerback in football. The Cleveland Browns Pro-Bowler is a master at disrupting routes at the catch point and breaking up passes, and now that he's coming off a down year by his standards, perhaps he can be had.

The Browns have said all the right things about wanting to keep him around, and he reaffirmed his commitment to the organization even after the Myles Garrett trade. Then again, if they traded Myles Garrett, then anyone can be available at the right price.

Ward is entering the final year of his contract. He's been tangled up in trade rumors for a while, and even if the Browns aren't shopping him, it might make sense for them to consider life after him. The Lions can give him a new deal right away, or, given his age, they might take a more cautious approach and wait to see how he fares in Kelvin Sheppard's defense.

Whatever the case, the Lions have to make a move. Ward can probably be available for a Day 2 pick, given Andrew Berry's love for mid-round selections and never-ending drive to hoard as much draft capital as possible.

The Lions have a promising rookie in Keith Abney II, but he's undersized and might need a year or two to be ready for that type of full-time responsibility. Ward would give them a plug-and-play guy to mentor him, and they could essentially move on from him after this season if things don't work out -- though that seems unlikely.

The Browns won't win that many games in 2026, whereas the Lions have Super Bowl aspirations. This would be a win-win situation for all parties involved.
