The Detroit Lions' Super Bowl quest begins on Saturday with a massive Division Round showdown with the Washington Commanders.

Although the Lions own one of the NFL's better defenses, they can't afford to underestimate Jaylen Daniels & Co. this weekend. The Commanders are averaging the fifth-most points and sixth-most total yards per game this season, meaning Detroit will likely need the best defensive performance possible to advance to the NFC Championship Game.

Fortunately, the perfect potential defensive addition just became available for the Lions to target.

Lions Should Sign Free Agent CB Tre Flowers

On Monday, any player on a non-playoff team's practice squad became free to sign anywhere, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. One freshly freed-up player who the Lions should target is veteran cornerback Tre Flowers.

Injuries have completely ravaged the Lions' secondary before their postseason run has even begun. Cornerbacks Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (hamstring/illness), Carlton Davis III (jaw), Emmanuel Moseley (non-football illness), and Khalil Dorsey (ankle) are either on the injured reserve or in danger of missing the Division Round.

Having said that, targeting a proven ballhawk like Flowers makes a lot of sense.

The 29-year-old CB spent the 2024 regular season with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts. He played five total games between the AFC South franchises, registering three solo tackles and a lost yardage tackle across 39 total snaps (16 defensive, 23 special teams).

Although he hasn't seen a ton of action this season, Flowers' experience could make him someone the Lions want to have in the locker room.

Not only has the ex-Oklahoma State product amassed 224 solo tackles, 22 defended passes, and four interceptions in 95 regular-season games, but he has 10 postseason outings under his belt — including when he reached Super Bowl LVI with the Cincinnati Bengals three years ago.

It's clear that Flowers has all of the tools to be someone that playoff teams would love to add at this point in the season. If the Lions want to prevent their CB-related woes from worsening, there's no harm in signing the veteran ballhawk for the remainder of the postseason.

Time will tell if Flowers makes his way to the Motor City in the coming days. In the meantime, the Lions are the clear-cut 9.5-point favorites to advance to the NFC Championship Game this weekend, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
