The Detroit Pistons are continuing to fill out their training camp roster ahead of media day next week, as their first preseason is shortly after that on October 6.
Last week, the Pistons reportedly signed three players to Exhibit 10 deals, which means that they could end up playing in the NBA G League this season. On Monday, Detroit reportedly signed an intriguing shooting guard who was on a two-way deal with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
According to Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype, the Pistons agreed to a deal with ex-Lakers guard Quincy Olivari. There were no other details regarding Olivari’s deal, but it would not be surprising if it's an Exhibit 10 deal, as Detroit has all three two-way slots filled.
Pistons Sign Former Laker Quincy Olivari Ahead of Training Camp
The 24-year-old Olivari spent part of last season on a two-way deal with the Lakers after making a name for himself in the preseason. The undrafted guard only appeared in two games with the Lakers, who waived him in January.
However, despite being waived, Olivari continued playing basketball with the Lakers’ G League affiliate in South Bay. As a rookie in the G League, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in 31 games.
Olivari’s performance with South Bay didn’t earn him another two-way deal last year, but he got a chance to play in the NBA Summer League with the Brooklyn Nets, and now will get to show his stuff with the Pistons.
Heading into training camp, the Pistons’ guard depth is set with Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey leading the way. Detroit also has Ausar Thompson and Caris LeVert, who should help at the 2 and 3.
We also can’t forget about Marcus Sasser and veteran Javonte Green, who will try to carve out roles on the team. Now, Detroit does have a couple of guards holding two-way spots in Colby Jones and Danniss Jenkins.
Jenkins was on a two-way last year with the Pistons and appeared in seven games with the club. He put up a lot of points in the G League with Motor City, averaging 21.2 points on 44.2 percent shooting from the field and 33.5 percent from three-point range. It was a lot of volume from Jenkins, who also dished out 6.8 assists per game.
Lastly, Jones has 69 games of NBA experience under his belt (Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings) and played in the G League.
Olivari has tough competition ahead of him. However, if the young guard plays well in the preseason or early on in the G League, either the Pistons or another team will be giving him a call.
