The Detroit Tigers will be buyers at MLB’s trade deadline, and their top target should be Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez. The 33-year-old is enjoying the second All-Star campaign of his career and his first since 2018, and his bat would go great at third base as Detroit looks to push for the American League pennant.

While it would be a great sight to reunite with Suarez, who made his debut as a 22-year-old rookie for the Tigers in 2014, it may not be realistic. Detroit’s odds of landing the All-Star took a turn for the worse on Monday afternoon, and it could be the precursor to finding a new target ahead of the trade deadline.

Tigers Trade Target Eugenio Suarez Enamored By Idea of Playing for Yankees

Suarez talked to the media as part of the MLB All-Star festivities in Atlanta on Monday afternoon and was asked about the chances of getting traded to another suitor, the New York Yankees. While there wasn’t a great answer after being asked the question, Suarez replied honestly and sounded enamored with the idea of putting on the pinstripes.

“It’s a team that wants to win,” Suarez said. “They’re hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”

For Tigers fans, this is like finding out your high school crush is already dating someone else. Suarez’s bat would be a perfect upgrade for a Detroit team that ranks 19th at third base with a .658 OPS this season and is hitting .250/.320/.569 with 31 homers and an MLB-leading 78 RBI for the Arizona Diamondbacks. But while the Tigers are bullish on the idea of bringing Suarez home, so are the Yankees.

The Yankees are one of the few teams that have a worse OPS (.653) than the Tigers at third base this season and could be looking for an offensive upgrade. The Tigers also have other competition, including the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners, who could be looking for a piece to get them over the top in October.

The good news is that the Tigers have assets to burn with the No. 1 farm system in MLB; however, Detroit may not want to jeopardize its future if the price of poker gets too much to play. It creates an interesting bidding war for Suarez down the stretch and an intriguing story of who gets to take the Belle of the ball home at the trade deadline.
