The Detroit Red Wings wrap up the regular season this afternoon at Madison Square Garden. The Red Wings need to win today to clinch a playoff spot.

The Detroit Red Wings wrap up the 2015-16 regular season this afternoon in New York. The Red Wings were embarrassed on Thursday in Boston as they lost 5-2.

The Boston Bruins got scored early and often as they led 2-0 after the first two minutes. The Bruins would make it 3-0 but the Red Wings got a goal from Alexey Marchenko. But the Bruins would score twice in the opening minute of the third which ended Jimmy Howard‘s night.

Andreas Athanasiou added a goal late but overall an embarrassing performance by the Red Wings. But hope is not lost for the Red Wings. A win in regulation OR overtime clinches the third spot in the Atlantic Division and sets up a rematch with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

A loss can still get the Red Wings in the playoffs but lets not think like that right now. The Red Wings are going with Jimmy Howard for this game and also catch a huge break with the Rangers sitting Henrik Lundqvist.

The Rangers are in a tough position because a win moves them to third but they would face the red hot Pittsburgh Penguins. A loss for the Rangers and they get the first Wild Card spot which would match them up with, in my opinion a easier matchup, the Florida Panthers.

The first two games between the Rangers and Red Wings have gone to overtime with each team winning once. But as mentioned above, Henrik Lundqvist is not starting today which is a huge break for the Red Wings.

It’s pretty simple for the Red Wings today. Win and there’re in. A loss in regulation would be a crusher. Dan Rosen explains all the scenarios here.  In my opinion with the Rangers sitting some of their stars, if the Red Wings lose today they have no one to blame but themselves.

I’ve said it from the beginning that the Red Wings get in the playoffs and win at least a round. I’m sticking with it. Red Wings win today 3-1 and the fans breathe a sigh of relief.
