The Detroit Lions have questionable depth at the quarterback position if anything were to happen to starter Jared Goff. The team's current options are Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker.
Neither player has notable starting experience nor can offer veteran leadership if things were to go sideways. The Lions do have possible upgrades remaining on the market in Carson Wentz and C.J. Beathard. How the team manages to manage the backup role is one of the more interesting stories moving forward.
One possible reunion option if the Lions want another wildcard option is former Lions quarterback Jake Fromm.
Former Lions QB Jake Fromm Continues Frustrating Offseason Search
Fromm, 26, has spent time with the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and Lions since being drafted 167th overall in 2020. His time with Detroit was spent as a member of the team's practice squad until he was waived in April.
While the quarterback's career hasn't progressed as he'd like, it is still surprising to see the former Lion unable to find an offseason landing spot. In a limited QB market, it would seem Fromm is talented enough to find an emergency third quarterback role.
In many ways, Fromm is the perfect emergency QB option, having the ceiling of a game manager. The veteran signal-caller isn't someone fans are going to be clamoring to see; however, he offers the advantage of having starting experience and having been in so many different systems.
The flip side of this is that despite all that experience, Fromm still can't land a backup job.
The Georgia product started his career as a backup before taking over for an injured Jacob Eason. The ex-Bulldog made the most of his chance in the lineup and would become the team's starting answer for the rest of his college career. Fromm twice led the Bulldogs to the SEC Championship and had an appearance in the CFP National Championship.
Even though the quarterback has never been an elite thrower, there was a proven ability to manage the game and play point guard at a high level.
Whether in the UFL or as a third option, Fromm is going to get a chance to continue his career. Despite the long wait, his resume is simply too accomplished not to continue in some capacity.
While this is unlikely to be in Detroit, the backup QB still has plenty of time to find a new home in the 2025 offseason.
