The Detroit Lions' training camp rolls on as the 2025 NFL season is only a month away, meaning it won't be long until head coach Dan Campbell begins to make roster cuts. The Lions already began trimming some fat on Monday when they announced that they were releasing undrafted rookie running back Kye Robichaux with an injury designation.

Robichaux has been dealing with an undisclosed injury throughout the last few weeks, and it got to the point where he missed the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. The Lions clearly weren't hopeful for an immediate return, resulting in their placing the former Boston College RB on waivers, and leaving time to tell where he'd eventually begin his NFL career.

As it turns out, the first-year runner isn't going anywhere just yet.

Rookie Lions RB Kye Robichaux Goes Unclaimed on Waivers, Joins IR

According to Pride of Detroit, Robichaux went unclaimed on waivers and has been placed on the Lions' injured reserve.

Injuries can damage a player's stock, and that's even more so the case for an undrafted rookie who's yet to even play in the preseason. Chances are that Robichaux will have to get healthy enough to return to the field before another team shows any interest in his services.

Having said that, just because Robichaux is on the Lions' IR doesn't mean he'll stay in Detroit all season. If he believes he'll be healthy before the season is over, the two sides can still come to a release via injury settlement, which would pay the ex-BC Eagle's medical expenses as well as the salary for any projected missed games.

Whether Robichaux stays on the IR or is eventually released, Lions fans now have more clarity regarding the team's backfield situation.

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery will handle the RB1 and RB2 duties again, respectively, while Sione Vaki will compete against second-year backs Jabari Small and Erick Hallett for the No. 3 role. Even if he were healthy, it's hard to imagine Robichaux edging those names out, barring a significant injury.

It'll be interesting to see if Robichaux will find a way to play some of his rookie season. In the meantime, the Lions will continue preparing for Friday's preseason clash with the Atlanta Falcons, which will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
